It’s not often you look up at a killer whales. Some would say that I’m quite adventurous on my little zodiac, but for me that adventurous spirit comes with years of acquired knowledge and understanding the ocean and its weather with an unwavering respect for it. On this occasion I was miles offshore at the entrance to the Juan De Fuca Strait on a rare day with very little wind, however there was some huge ocean swells rolling through. It was actually quite hard to keep a visual on the long-diving transient killer whales I’d spotted from the low angle from my zodiac, just a few feet above sea level. On one occasion after the orcas had killed what I guessed to be a harbour porpoise, one male swam in my direction; as he passed, I was lying on the wet floor of my zodiac — the timing perfectly lined up and I managed to snap this unusual angle (looking up and the fin) as I was low in the trough of the wave as he was surfacing to breathe on the crest.
