I think the story behind this photo may be one of the coolest I have…..? I’ll let you choose. I was out tracking muskoxen when I got a call on the radio for Nansen my college from the helicopter, it was a very broken transmission but I got that wolves had taken down a bull muskox…. I could see the location of the helicopter miles away across the tundra so I calculated the rough location and headed across the tundra. Being so cold, and the kill so fresh I could not smell it so it took hours to location but I finally found the kill. The wolves were not there but I knew they would be coming back. I was hesitant to leave my camera as bad weather was coming in, wind and possible heavy rain. I did not want to set close to the kill or leave human scent so I place my camera on a mount, then put my rain jacket on top and buried it with just the lens sticking out of the end. I added a fresh battery and then set up the time lapse setting which I normally use for astrophotography. It took one photo every 10 seconds and is always hard to get the correct light setting as it changes over the 6 or 7 hour the battery may last. I left the kill around 9 pm and was nervous about the camera all night as heavy rain did come in. The camera took 1000’s of photos, showed an arctic fox coming in early, then two different wolves. At one point, to my amazement, one of the wolves stood above the kill perfectly in frame and posed for this shot. The far north, less than a 100 miles from the north pole, the sun never sets so this shot was taken at about 4 in the morning, just before the battery died and the memory card in the camera was fun. I also love the Arctic Cotton on this shot.
